Some say its great, many say Star Wars is ruined. In reference to the audience score on RT, the blame shifted from “toxic white man bad” to “AI”.
“Star Wars: The Acolyte,” the latest series from Disney+, has become the lowest-rated project in the Star Wars franchise, according to audience scores on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes. Despite high anticipation and a promising premise, the show has failed to resonate with much of its audience, leading to a significant drop in its ratings.
Audience vs. Critic Ratings: While “The Acolyte” received an 85% rating from critics, its audience score plummeted to a mere 14%, making it the lowest-rated Star Wars project ever, even lower than the critically panned “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” movie from 2008. This drastic difference between critic and audience ratings has been partly attributed to “review bombing,” where users flood a show with negative reviews for reasons that may not always relate to its actual content.
Possible Reasons for the Backlash: The series, which explores the darker side of the Force during the High Republic era, has sparked controversy among some segments of the Star Wars fanbase. Some critics have suggested that the show’s inclusion of diverse characters and themes, including a romantic subplot between two female characters, may have incited backlash from viewers resistant to these narratives. Others, however, point to genuine issues with the show’s writing, pacing, and character development as reasons for its poor reception (The Independent) (Daily Disney News) (Along Main Street).
Despite its initial strong viewership, “The Acolyte” has struggled to maintain its momentum, leading to its drop off the Nielsen streaming charts within weeks of its release. Whether the series can recover and win over its critics remains to be seen, but it currently stands as a contentious entry in the Star Wars universe (Bounding Into Comics) (SFFGazette.com).
Interesting priorities…
